Hamlet Redux at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center
The South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center (SMDCAC), which officially opens next month, will bring the performing arts to life for those who may not have an opportunity to experience the joy of theater.
Next mont,h the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center will present “Hamlet Redux,” a contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic play performed by the Tampa-based Asolo Repertory Theatre Company. The play, adapted by Stephanie Fleischmann and Dmitry Troyanovsky and directed by Troyanovsky, modernizes one of the most well-known plays of all time.
What makes this event unique is the fact that it is part of the Shadow Interpreted Theater Program and Open Access Theater Series, a program that makes theater accessible to audiences with or without disabilities. This unique program is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. Multiple American Sign Language Interpreters perform alongside, or shadow, each of the actors and perform in unison without disrupting the natural flow of the performance.
But, that’s not all. The South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center, which is committed to literally bringing the arts to the community, will present “Hamlet Redux,”which is kid friendly, to children in South Florida area schools. For many children, this may be their first contact with theater.
