Hear and now: Zeitgeist’s 3rd Annual New Music Cabaret
The Twin Cities have more than their fair share of jazz, improvisational and experimental music talent, and even with the recent closing of some beloved venues for such performing artists, St. Paul still boasts a number of great places to hear them play: Black Dog Coffee and Wine Bar in Lowertown, the Artists’ Quarter, Studio Z. (If you’re looking for a definitive resource on where to find such fare, check out music writer Pamela Espeland’s exhaustive Twin Cities jazz calendar.)
And this week, from Thursday through Sunday, Zeitgeist and Studio Z are hosting their 3rd Annual New Music Cabaret. The musicians of Zeitgeist have made it something of a fall tradition to celebrate the wide diversity of artists composing and performing new music in this neck of the woods. Each evening of this year’s cabaret, your $10 admission gives you access to upwards of four hours of live music; with that ticket, you may attend one or all of the shows on stage for the night, as you like.
This year’s line-up is both eclectic and appealing. Of course, Zeitgeist will perform each evening; they’ll be joined the first night by the classical Artaria string quartet, who’ll play some Shostakovich, followed by new compositions by the jazz collective, Illicit Sextet. Friday, Zeitgeist will again take the stage, along with the contemporary classical musicians of RenegadeEnsemble, new material in the Carnatic Indian music tradition by Nirmala Rajasekar and Ill Chemistry, featuring beatboxing by Carnage paired with whip-smart hip-hop by Desdamona. Saturday highlights include “urban chamber music” responding to this year’s Arab Spring, performed by Mississippi Peace, and jazz improvisation by Douglas Ewart and Quasar. The four-day festival wraps with a night including the inventive improvisational ensemble AntiGravity and some tuneful experimental numbers by Julie Johnson & the No-Accounts.
Zeitgeist’s New Music Cabaret’s tightly curated but diverse selection of performances makes it a particularly good introduction to some of the cities’ most intriguing artists on stage right now.
The 3rd Annual Zeitgeist New Music Cabaret runs Thursday, Nov. 3 to Sunday, Nov. 6. Performances begin nightly at 7:30 p.m.; admission is $10 for one or all the evening’s shows at Studio Z, located in the Northwestern Building, 275 E. Fourth St., St. Paul, Minn. Find the full schedule of performers and show times, artist bios and program notes on the Studio Z website.
