Impressionistic rug expressions

“No Rain No Rainbows” rug from Agustina Woodgate.

Agustina Woodgate works with found and everyday objects, with the way people interact with space, situations, location, but in a mundane way. Her sculpture and installation (and billboards) are not in-your-face, nor seemingly “imposed” on the surroundings — they are part of it, and questioning it, how we relate to objects and environments and their personal meanings. The Argentine native and Miami resident has been creating rugs for sometime, not the first or the last artist to do so, but following in the strain of her art-making, these address the personal. First off, rugs and carpets can relay very intimate details of a space or a home. They can suggest cultural and class backgrounds, they can be inviting or disinviting, in the form of kitschy welcome mats or ornate and expensive Orientals. They can be generic or pieces of art in their own right.

Woodgate has hand-made made her versions from the pelts of stuffed toys. They are lovely, but obviously off-kilter as well — these are the remnants of things that children once loved and cuddled, now, like real animal hides, material for a decorative household item that one walks on. Her rugs have been gathered for a solo show at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood called “Rug Collection.” Represented by Spinello Projects, Woodgate has been part of public art projects throughout Miami recently, including at the Bass Museum and the billboard series of Locust Projects. But this will be the first outing of her rug art exclusively.

“Agustina Woodgate: Rug Collection” opens tonight and runs through May 25 at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, 1650 Harrison St., Hollywood; www.artandculturecenter.org.
