Inside the Key Studio Sessions Live

By Bruce Warren, WXPN

Each week WXPN’s local music website The Key makes available as a free digital download a studio recording session with a local Philadelphia band. Quarterly, thanks to the grant from Knight, we’ve been taking these sessions on the road to a local club for a free show and recording the bands. The inaugural Key Studio Sessions Live featured three bands from Philadelphia including the 70’s “yachtrock” influenced Work Drugs, indie singer-songwriters Hezekiah Jones w/ special guest Andrew Lipke and the hip hop band Black Landlord. The show was held at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia on September 12th.

Black Landlord’s entire set was recorded for a Key Studio Video Session and they performed material from their new EP, What You Mean To We. Black Landlord’s charismatic front man Maxx Stoyanoff-Williams has been a long time part of the local Philadelphia music scene playing in the band Incogegro and before that with The Goats, still a highly revered rap group who were together in early Nineties. During the interview he talked about his long musical journey from The Goats to Black Landlord and how he writes and collaborates with his eleven-piece band.
