Miami Dade College’s MDC Live Arts will transport audiences to the heart of Argentina, where tango courses through the country like the Rio de la Plata. The Argentinian-born, Brooklyn-based bassist and producer Pablo Aslan and his quintet will perform Piazzolla in Brooklyn, which is a work that illuminates the intersection between jazz and tango. The Quintet opens at The Colony Theatre on South Beach at 8 p.m. next Saturday, April 20.

“Pablo Aslan is a master at fusing the languages of jazz and tango, and we are thrilled to present him with this latest project that offers audiences new ways to experience the world and legacy of Astor Piazzolla,” says MDC Live Arts Executive Director Kathryn Garcia.

Astor Piazzolla, an Argentinean tango composer and bandoneon (a type of concertina) player revolutionized traditional tango into a new style called, well, nuevo tango. After Piazolla died, Aslan obsessively focused on the connection between tango and jazz. In fact, Piazzolla’s jazz tango recording, “Take Me Dancing,” inspired Aslan’s Piazzolla in Brooklyn.

Aslan’s recordings over the years have earned him great acclaim—”Avantango” (2004), “Buenos Aires Tango Standards” (2007) and “Tango Grill” (2009). “Tango Grill” earned Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations. Next Saturday, the Pablo Aslan Quintet is a must-see performance that also marks the end of MDC Live Arts 2012–13 season.
