Locust Project’s Smash and Grab is a steal

There are several one-off art events every year that are must checks on the calendar for collectors, artists and art lovers. One such happening has become the time-honored fundraiser for the non-for-profit Locust Projects (a Knight Arts grantee), one of Miami’s most important venues for original, non-commercial, cutting-edge artwork. Non-commercial is the key word here, as the annual Smash and Grab art auction and fundraiser is the largest source of revenue for the space. Because people know there is a need for such a place to keep the cultural scene alive and progressing, Locust has always managed to get a wide array of top artists to donate works. This year — on Saturday night, Oct. 28 — is no exception.

Of the more than 100 artists, there are far too many to name here, but as a sampling, these are some of the artists whose works are on the block. Well-established names, such as Pablo Cano, Francie Bishop Good and Roberto Behar & Rosario Marquardt; more mid-career artists, such as Jorge Pantoja, Michael Loveland and Beatriz Monteavaro; founders of Locust, COOPER and Westen Charles; younger video artists, such as Antonia Wright and Jillian Mayer; recent art school grads, such as Sleeper; and popular names, such as Friends With You and Daniel Arsham. But there are many others that anyone would want to take home.

And you can take one home. For $450 (which admits two), the event is a raffle, and there is enough artwork so that each raffle ticket is guaranteed to win a piece. Tickets are drawn randomly thorough the evening party — first called gets first pick. Most collections, big or small, are likely to benefit, as does Locust.

Smash and Grab Raffle Fundraiser starts at 6:30 on Saturday, Oct. 29 and goes until 9:30; tickets are $450 for the raffle. $50 for general admission; 305-576-8570 or go to www.locustprojects.org.
