Lots of bests at the “Biennial”

One nice element of the “Fifth All-Media Juried Biennial,” now up at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, is that many of the names attached to the works are unfamiliar. Another nice element is many of the pieces are so good.

That’s not always the case in huge group and competition shows — more often than not only a handful of works stand out. And while the Best in Show went to a well-known name, Susan Lee-Chun (represented by the David Castillo Gallery), other winners are names that are far less visible, such as Gonzalo Fuenmayor. South Florida’s art scene, so concentrated as it is in Miami, can get a little claustrophobic. It’s refreshing to have it expanded, not just to Broward but also to artists from across the state.

Credit goes to the two jurors, not a likely duo: artists and curators Michelle Weinberg, creative director of Fort Lauderdale’s Girls’ Club, and Scott Murray, director of the alt art space Twenty Twenty Projects and a Knight Arts Challenge winner. With two quite different pairs of eyes doing the choosing, the “Biennial” ends up being an eclectic and interesting mix of art. Up-and-comer Nicholas Arehart is represented with a video, along with Juan Maristany, who currently has a wonderful piece in the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, Undersung painter Jordan Massengale gets a corner space, and Kerry Phillips takes over a back wall. The most deserved winning works come from Loriel Beltran, now at the Fredric Snitzer Gallery. But other pieces from Antonia Wright and Ruben Millares (video) and Raul Perdomo (painting), to name a few, keep the energy and interest flowing. It’s a good bet more than one piece will catch and capture your eye.

“Fifth All-Media Juried Biennial” runs through June 5 at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, 1650 Harrison St., Hollywood; 954-921-3274; artandculturecenter.org.
