Macon Little Theatre presents a nerdy comedy full of laughs and surprises

“The Nerd” at Macon Little Theatre. Playing now through May 19.

The success of television shows like CBS’s ‘The Big Bang Theory” are no accident. The nerds have taken over entertainment, and their stories are being told on screen and on stage. Macon Little Theatre must have caught on to the phenomenon, because their current production is a situational comedy aptly titled “The Nerd.”

Written in 1985, this Larry Shue comedy was created long before the current fad overtook popular culture. Today’s nerd comedies elevate the intellectual, but socially inept, geek to the status of cool. This story’s “nerd” is anything but cool.

The plot follows a young architect who is visited by a man he’s never met, but who saved his life during the Vietnam War. The visitor appears to be an inept “nerd” who quickly outstays his welcome. A plot to get him out of the house is soon formed, but things don’t always go according to plan. As the story unfolds, audiences enjoy plenty of laughs and a few surprises along the way. There’s more than meets the eye in this story of a man’s life disrupted. The cast of “The Nerd.” Photo courtesy of Macon Little Theatre
