McColl Center for Visual Art welcomes its second Knight Foundation artist-in-residence

McColl Center for Visual Art is pleased to announced our second Knight Foundation Artist-in-Residence, Quisqueya Henriquez, from the Dominican Republic who will be in residence at the Center from June 1 to July 20, 2011. Born in Cuba, the daughter of a Cuban father and a Dominican Republic mother, Quisqueya Henriquez flourished in an artistically inclined family. Her work often fuses formalities of economics, current events, and Art History with vernacular life in the Caribbean.

“Quisqueya Henriquez combines several different mediums- sculpture, prints, collage, video, installation to create work that responds conceptually to current events, and stereotypes around ethnicity and gender. The community will be surprised by the fact that Quisqueya’s work, while often minimalist, is layered with deep meaning and contact” says Ce Scott, Creative Director.

After graduating from the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana, Cuba, Henriquez has exhibited throughout Latin America, Europe, and the US. Her work is in important private and public collections including El Museo del Barrio, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, FL; Miami Art Museum; Cintas Foundation, NY; Rhode Island School of Design; and Collection Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, NY, among many others. The September 2007 issue of ARTnews named Henriquez one of 25 art world trendsetters. Before traveling to the Miami Art Museum, Henriquez’s mid-career retrospective at the Bronx Museum of the Arts garnered a review in the New York Times.
