MDC Live Arts opens 22nd season with Modern Flamenco

By  Sue Arrowsmith, Miami Dade College

Award-winning choreographers and founders of the renowned Nuevo Ballet Español, Angel Rojas and Carlos Rodríguez, will present Cambio de Tercio for the first time in the U.S. as part of Miami Dade College’s MDC Live Arts performing arts series at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 5 – 6, at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium.

Nuevo Ballet Español will present Cambio de Tercio two nights only on Oct. 5-6 at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium.

At the forefront of emerging trends in Spanish dance and flamenco, Nuevo Ballet Español draws on traditional dance, a 21st-century pop sensibility and folkloric influences from Andalucía. In Cambio de Tercio, they deliver a dazzling mix of traditional and contemporary styles, performed by the full company of dancers and musicians.

“Rojas and Rodríguez put a fresh spin on flamenco that taps into passions both old and new,” as printed in the British newspaper Metro.

Rojas and Rodríguez shared the Best Dancer Award at the Spanish Annual Dance and Flamenco Choreography Awards in 1994. In 2000, they were named Outstanding Dancers and Best Spanish Dance Company at the Jerez DDOO awards. They were awarded the Villa Prize Pilar López for Best Dance Performer 2005.

In addition, Nuevo Ballet Español received the First Prize UP for Best Flamenco and Spanish Dance Company in 1999 and the Villa de Madrid Prize for Best Dance Interpreters in 2005. The company has toured the world, including Spain, Holland, France, Hong Kong, Belgium, Venezuela, the Philippines, Finland, Japan, and Portugal.

“The artistry of Rojas and Rodríguez is absolutely thrilling,” said MDC Live Arts’ Executive Director Kathryn Garcia. “Nuevo Ballet Español is sure to electrify Miami audiences with two unforgettable performances.”
