Micro Theater Miami is big stuff

Micro Theater Miami is the Mini Cooper of theater, where compact performances (usually less than 15 minutes) come fully loaded with concisely fleshed out scripts, well-appointed props and a cast of talented Miami-based actors and actresses. Sponsored by the Centro Cultural de Espana Miami (CCEM), Micro Theater Miami features micro plays loosely tied to a common theme “For the Future” and runs through July 8, 2012.

Wildly successful in Europe, Micro Theater Miami is an innovative performance platform in an intimate environment (limited to 15 audience members) that encourages interaction between the audience and the performers. The closeness enhances the experience, especially when Carrie is on the playbill.

“Carrie No Asistira” (performed in Spanish), written by Nacho López and directed and performed by Denise Sánchez y Paulina Gálvez, is a comedy that takes its inspiration from infamous 1976 film Carrie starring Sissy Spacek. In “Carrie No Asistira,” two friends reunite at a school reunion and soon heads start to spin. Scary, maybe. Worth the experience, definitely. Another micro debut, “The Position” (performed in English), written by Alexa Dooseman and Idoia de Eguia Luna and directed by Iván R. Lopez, follow two characters who try to outwit each other and humiliate themselves to get their dream job.

Micro theater doesn’t replace macro theater, just like Twitter doesn’t replace email, but what micro theater does accomplish is huge. This platform provides an opportunity for a variety of Miami-based talent to show its big beating heart on the micro stage.
