Miguel Gutierrez and the Powerful People perform at The Colony

Elizabeth Doud, artistic director of Miami Dade College’s Cultura del Lobo series, is excited about Miguel Gutierrez and the Powerful People’s upcoming performance of Last Meadow, and you should be excited too. On Friday and Saturday, March 25 – 26, Gutierrez and company will invade The Colony Theater on Miami Beach with what is sure to be a subversively wild performance.

The performance, inspired by James Dean’s roles in East of Eden, Rebel without a Cause and Giant, rebels against the staid social structure that constricts America’s youth. The performance is timely as it “reaches back 50 years to portray an America where the jig is up and the dream has died.”

Last Meadow is, on multiple levels, a performance that captures today’s contradictory cultural and social norms by the toes and releases it anew on stage. The performance incorporates dance passages, monologues, action and singing to express the youth angst, longing and frustration through the body, through movement, in ways that words alone cannot.

In 2010, Last Meadow won a Bessie Award for its collage-like score created by composer Neal Medlyn along with lighting by longtime collaborator Lenore Doxsee. Miguel Gutierrez will be accompanied onstage by the Powerful People performers Michelle Boulé and Tarek Halaby.

“This is the most experimental performance that we are presenting this year,” said Doud. “Gutierrez’s work… represents a young American voice that is directly questioning not only social norms but also norms in artistic practice. He… isn’t overly concerned with the aesthetics of beauty, but delivers a blend of dance-poetry that is unapologetic and irreverent, yet endearing in image, movement and voice.”

Miguel Gutierrez and the Powerful People will also host educational residencies and a professional workshop before the show workshop at INKUB8. For more information on workshops please contact the MDC Cultural Affairs Department at 305-237-3010.
