Downtown Hollywood isn’t Wynwood – in fact both neighborhoods would prefer to be their own entities. But in the last several years, Broward’s hip coastal town has developed an outdoor mural program that,while not as crazy as Wynwood, has some stellar stuff on its walls. Adding to the works of the likes of Jessy Nite, 2Alas, Luis Pinto, Ruben Ubiera and Lebo (that one has some controversy swirling around it, but we know his work well) will be Michelle Weinberg’s latest public creation.

As part of the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project, Weinberg is covering the walls (indents and warts and all) of The Great Southern Hotel, near the Arts Park at Young Circle, close to Nite’s “Diamonds” mural. Weinberg will be creating designs with her signature style of bright, geometric patterns that somehow don’t always fit just right – there are imperfections in the geometry, making you take a second look.

One of her most prominent and bigger public art projects is the cement tile outdoor covering of the ground and walls, at the GSA Trade Shops facility in Miami,  a Miami-Dade Art in Public Places commission called “Shadow Canopy.” Almost like a rug (which she also makes), this elaborately patterned “floor” is made from handmade 12-inch tiles, covering 3,000 square feet of the entry plaza. It transformed the new space. Now she is working with the facades and store signs already in existence in the Hollywood circle for “Oasis in Progress,” which can be seen during the Third Saturday Artwalks, the next one being July 20. Weinberg has also been picked to “quilt” the sidewalk of the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood.
