Next Friday night…
Inkub8, a recent Knight Arts Challenge recipient, hosts a feedback forum on March 16 at 8 p.m. with emerging South Florida artists Becky Flowers, Jenny Larsson, Katie Meehan & Sam Hanson, Karen Peterson and Dancers and Pioneer Winter. The purpose of the forum is to foster deeper connections between artists and the community in which they create their work.
It’s an open discussion format and artists will discuss their progress, process and possibly reveal the kinks and quirks they usually encounter when putting their works together. This is an excellent opportunity for the community to get a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to create a work from scratch.
Friday March 16, 8 p.m., 2021 N.W. First Place Miami, Fla. 33127. Cost: $10 Donation. For info, contact 305-482-1621, [email protected] or visit www.inkub8.org.
After Inkub8’s open forum, head over to the Coral Gables Art Cinema, a place that is quickly becoming the center of cinematic culture in Miami. Meet Oscar Award-winning director Fernando Trueba (“Belle Epoque” and “Calle 54”) for the South Florida premiere of his latest film, “Chico & Rita,” while you sample delicious Cuban food from Havana Harry’s, my favorite Cuban restaurant.
Back to the film: “Chico & Rita” is an animated love story that chronicles a tumultuous love affair and evokes the sensuous, rhythmic energy of 1950’s Cuba — a time when Cuban music and culture seem like it would take over the world. As an added bonus, Grammy Award-winning Latin jazz musician Federico Britos and his trio will perform prior to both screenings on March 16, at 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Opening Night Red Carpet Event, Friday, March 16, screenings at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Trueba will be attending in person and participating in a Q&A for both screenings. Cost: $25. Purchase tickets online at www.gablescinema.com, in-person at the Cinema box office during film screening hours or on opening night. All other regular screening tickets are $11 and under and are only available in person at the box office. First week screenings times: Friday 3/16 at 7 and 10 p.m. (with a reception at 9 p.m.); Saturday 3/17 at 3, 7 and 9:30 p.m. (Conversation with Fernando Trueba at 5 p.m.); Sunday 3/18 at 2:30, 4:30, 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.; Monday 3/19 through Thursday 3/22 at 4:30, 6:30 and 8:30. 260 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables, Fla. 33134.
