North Carolina Dance Theatre’s 2013-2014 season holds lots of promise

The North Carolina Dance Theatre’s 2013-2014 season promises to be just as riveting, just as ecstatic and just as innovative as the 2012-2013 season. Tickets for the 2013-2014 season are now on sale. Subscriptions at the Premium, Deluxe or Super level offer the best deals, with tickets starting at $77 for up to three performances. Subscription packages vary depending on shows and seating preferences.

The 2013-2014 season will include:

  • Sasha Janes’ adaptation of “Carmen” will run from October 17-19 in the Knight Theater. Billed as a “sultry start to the season,” “Carmen” uses Georges Bizet’s famous score for opera, but takes the story from Spain to 1934 Charlotte amidst the textile mill strikes. In Janes’ version, Carmen is a feisty mill worker who seduces her captor, a National Guard soldier called in to temper the strike. The evening will open with a performance of George Balanchine’s “Western Symphony,” set by associate artistic director Patricia McBride.
  • “Nutcracker” will run from December 13-22 in the Belk Theater. “Nutcracker” is a classic holiday tradition for families and ballet lovers alike. More than 100 performers will dazzle in Bonnefoux’s “Nutcracker,” with live music provided by the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra.
  • “Innovative Works,” a collaborative performance featuring local artists and new ballets, will run from January 23 to February 15 in the North Tryon Theater. This performance is particularly arresting, as it is danced in an intimate theater with a black box feel, giving the audience an unprecedented viewing experience. Collaborations between local artists, musicians and the ballets’ choreographers — Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux, Mark Diamond, Sasha Janes and Dwight Rhoden — are sure to produce truly innovative pieces.
  • “Cinderella,” a classic ballet full of magic, humor and romance, will run from March 6-16 in the Knight Theater. With extravagant sets and costumes, “Cinderella” is sure to be a family favorite.
  • “Othello” will run from April 24-26 in the Knight Theater.  This musical theater-style adaptation by Dwight Rhoden puts Shakespeare’s characters into a 21st-century, rock-and-roll lifestyle. “Othello” promises to be dramatic, with athletic and theatrical dance numbers. Opening this performance is Jiri Kylian’s “Forgotten Land,” which takes inspiration from a painting of water eroding the shore.
