Octavio Campos performs at MLP

When I think of Octavio Campos, I think of the ancient Greek mythological beast, the Chimera. Not that Campos is a beast per se, but he embodies the wild fire-breathing magic of the Chimera. His work, and his heart, exists in a space where fearless imagination enables him to push the boundaries of performance action/performance art/dance/theater/etc.

On Wednesday, October 9th at 7 p.m. at The Light Box at the Goldman Warehouse, Octavio Campos will perform as part of Thought Loom’s “Synapse Performance Project: Showing 1,” a Knight Arts grantee. With surreal images created by artist Robert Flynt, Campos has created TRPL Quince, a work-in-progress that takes a provocative look into the process of aging in a culture bent on stopping this natural process. TRPL Quince, based off a quinceañera, which is a giant party in Latin American culture that celebrates a girl’s 15th birthday. It generally celebrates the transition from childhood to womanhood.

In TRPL Quince, Campos celebrates his transition into his three tri-quince-mester of life. Through image, sound and movement, TRPL Quince is like a giant party, a performance that invites the audience inside the line. With collaborators David Fishel, Robert Flynt and Leslie Neal, the group will provide a sneak peak of TRPL Quince. Following the performance, a fundraiser will feature a hypno-event by Campos, as well as guest performances by Natasha Tsakos, Diana Lozano (from Circ X), Pioneer Winter, Brooke Bartlett and many others. The fundraiser benefits the future development of TRPL Quince and its future showing at the Baryshnikov Arts Center on January 10-14, 2014 and at Dance New Amsterdam on January 18th, 2014.

The “Synapse Performance Project: Showing 1” and TRPL Quince fundraiser will take place Wednesday, October 9 at 7 p.m. at 404 NW 26th St., Miami. Suggested donation: $2o.
