Q & A with comedian Sheri Flanders
Sheri Flanders studied improv at The Second City Training Center and iO (formerly Improv Olympic) in Chicago, as well at Just The Funny’s conservatory in Coral Gables. She is a director, actor, multidisciplinary artist and cast member of Just The Funny. On Saturday, August 23rd at 9 p.m., join Flanders and Cheap Trills – Musical Improv Comedy, Miami’s only all-musical improv troupe, for their next show, “Improv Singing Glory” at Just the Funny Theater. Sheri Allender
Neil de la Flor: What’s the current state of comedy in South Florida?
Sheri L. Flanders: The art of improvisational theater is currently experiencing a renaissance in South Florida and Just The Funny, the longest-running improv theater in the region, is the catalyst for this explosion. Its newest creation is the musical improv troupe Cheap Trills. In this show, actors create a full-length musical complete with songs, dance numbers and rapping based on a single audience suggestion. Absolutely nothing is scripted or planned in advance. It is a highly ambitious show that is unlike anything else going on in the region.
ND: What was the impetus for a musical improv?
SF: The idea for a musical improv team was spearheaded just six months ago. I studied at the Second City and iO (formerly Improv Olympic) training centers in Chicago, the birthplace of the art form. The team is co-directed by Tom Neile who was recently named Just The Funny’s very first Artistic Director. Our inaugural show was fortunate enough to be graced by the presence of NYC actor/improv guru Scotty Watson. Both directors share a vision of improv that transcends the comedic and delves into dramatic waters. ND: Can Miami find its own comedic way?
SF: In Chicago, Improv is more closely aligned with the theater community at large – non-comedic actors at theaters such as Steppenwolf often view an education at the Second City and iO as essential items in their toolbox. In Miami, until recently, improv has been seen as an extension of the comedy/stand-up community. But a sea change is underway as improvisers in Miami begin to flex their dramatic muscles and begin to follow in the footsteps of Chicago.
“Improv Singing Glory” takes place Saturday, August 23rd at 9 p.m. at Just The Funny theater, located at 3119 SW 22nd St. Miami; 305-693-8669. Tickets are $10-14. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/events/251898258351202.
