Residencies to open horizons
ArtCenter/South Florida, as promised, is continuing to expand its scope. In its 30th year anniversary, the center has already announced that it has sold its flagship building at 800 Lincoln Road on Miami Beach, which is giving it a massive infusion of funds to re-open another space elsewhere and expand programming significantly (as of now, the new location remains an unknown, although the 924 building on Lincoln will remain).
One new venture has just been announced: a collaborative three-month residency with organizations in Spain, Mexico and Peru, signaling its intention to broaden into multi-geographical areas.
“TransVisiones/Alcobendas” is a photography-based residency that will take place in the spring, and is an interventionist, public arts program meant to revitalize the city of Alcobendas near Madrid. While applicants need to be working in the field of photography, they should also be conscious of how their work can help inspire cultural generation in the city. An artist from South Florida will join those from Peru and Mexico in Alcobendas, and after the run of the residency in June, each will be featured in PhotoEspaña. Each must also donate one piece of work made during the residency, and after submitting a book proposal, one will be chosen to create an artist book (with payment of the not insignificant sum of 6,000 EUR, about $7,400). The residency itself will include travel, housing and a stipend for living and production expenses.
The thing is, you have to apply by Jan. 19 at 11:59 p.m. (the program begins in March). It’s a good opportunity, one which should help kickstart more global exchanges; for all details and where to apply, go to www.artcentersf.org/intl-exchange.
