“Resonancias” by Jose Luis Rodriguez
“Resonancias,” presented by FUNDarte‘s Miami On Stage: Knight New Works Series, opens May 8th and 9th, at the Miami Dade County Auditorium On.Stage Black Box Theater.
The performance is an interdisciplinary and multicultural collaboration conceived by Flamenco guitarist and composer Jose Luis Rodriguez. The work includes images and staging by Alexey Taran and Carla Forte, choreography by Niurca Marquez, Alex Jordan on second guitar and live-generted electronic soundscapes by Gustavo Matamoros. Rodriguez, whose collaborative album “10×1” was 2011 Grammy Flamenco finalist, employs electronic manipuilations to Flamenco to create a new, nuanced language that is evocative, contemporary, yet ancestral.
“In ‘Resonancias,’ many emotions and images come together that first appeared after the death of my father and my arrival in the U.S. Many of those images were not of actual moments that I lived, but rather memories, stories and legends passed down in my family,” writes Rodriguez. “With those ‘given’ memories, my music has also been transformed, fed by my own artistic curiosity and a search for those sparks that for me are a reflection of my ancestors and the very essence of being human.”
Through his memories, Rodriguez creates music that transports us into and through his personal history, but he also takes us on a journey into the evolving history of Flamenco.
