RetroRama invites you to “wear your vintage” at the History Center this Friday
Minnesota History Center’s annual vintage dress-up party, RetroRama, is this week. This year’s shindig isn’t themed on a specific time period, but rather “classic” fashion: “a perfect pair of jeans, an heirloom hand knit sweater, a gorgeous belt burnished with age, or vintage khakis. …your grandmother’s little black cocktail dress, or [for him]… a great pair of rustic Carhartts.”
There will be live music by the burlesque-themed Moustache Jim & the Straight Razors and fashion shows at 9 and 10 p.m., DJ-ed by Jake Rudh, which will showcase vintage styles and new work by area designers including “Project Runway” veteran Danielle Everine, Laura Fulk, Sarah M. Holm, Max Lohrbach and Kerry Riley. In addition, there will be pop-up boutiques by Flamingo’s Divine Finds, Cliché, Blacklist Vintage and Spectacle Shoppe. Besides all this, visitors are invited to partake of retro games “indoors and out,” courtesy of the Office of Johnston; maybe you’d like to take in a demo or two: learn how to mix a proper cocktail, say, or give an old-school, barbershop shave.
RetroRama is Friday, May 17 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Minnesota History Center, 345 W. Kellogg Blvd, St. Paul. General admission is $25 ($20 MHS members); call 651-259-3015 to order tickets (the link to purchase tickets online from the event page appears to be broken). After the official event closes, revelers may head over to the official RetroRama afterparty, hosted by Amsterdam Bar & Hall at 6 W. 6th St. in St. Paul, where there will be themed drink specials, music and food from 10:30 p.m. to 2 a.m.
