Roofless Records blows roof off MOCA

In 2011 Roofless Records won a Knight Arts grant to document music and performance art in Miami. Since then Roofless has expanded beyond its record label roots and is now producing conceptual art events and concerts in movie theaters, art fairs and museums.

This Wednesday, June 27th at 7 p.m., Roofless Records will transform the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in North Miami into an experimental performance sound stage for local musicians featuring DJ sets by Matt Preira (co-founder of Roofless Records); the Dion Kerr jazz ensemble; and Radio Test, an original experimental sound performance that incorporates elements of dance, interaction and spectacle.

According to Preira, “Radio Test is Roofless Records dipping its bulbous, hairy toes into a thick, tepid pool of non-concert performative action. We often subvert the typical concert format — bands in movie theaters, 30 bands playing for one minute each, etc. — but Radio Test is an even more intentional effort to make people listen and watch without dosing them in a smoky bar at one in the morning.”

Named after the Roofless House in Sarasota, FL, the founders’ post-dorm college digs, Roofless Records was named in the spirit of gangsta rap diction. “With ‘roofless’”, Preira says, “as a slang pronunciation of ruthless….the name is also partially inspired by Magritte’s ‘Ceci n’est pas une pipe’ because our logo is a house with a roof that says ‘Roofless’ underneath it.”

Beyond the hairy toes and non-concert raison d’etre, Preira says the MOCA music event will be 60 percent schmooze-friendly, 20 percent subliminal swag, 20 percent priceless confusion. It will also give musical voyeurs and connoisseurs an earful of Miami’s experimental music scene — a scene that is firmly rooted in the underground noise rock movement of the early 1990s.

Music at MOCA featuring Roofless Records, Wednesday, June 27, 7-9 p.m. Museum of Contemporary Art, 770 NE 125th St., North Miami. Admission is free for MOCA members and North Miami residents; $5 general admission and $3 for students with ID. To RSVP, please visit www.mocanomi.org or call 305-893-6211.
