Seraphic Fire, the Miami-based concert choir that snagged two Grammy nominations earlier this year, announced this week that it’s signed with Naxos of America in a three-year deal to distribute its recordings. A news release from Seraphic Fire quotes Jim Selby, the CEO of Naxos of America, which is based near Nashville, this way: “We look forward to working with this enthusiastic and forward-thinking group in promoting the wonderful recordings that they work so hard to create.”

The choir, led by Patrick Dupre Quigley, has always recorded on its own label, Seraphic Fire Media, and will continue to do so in this arrangement, officials with the chorus said. But what makes this another nice feather in the Seraphic Fire cap is the power of Naxos, which began as the pet project of Klaus Heymann, a German entrepreneur and former journalist who founded it in 1987, and which has become a hugely important force in the world of classical recordings.

It is usually billed as the largest independent classical label in the world, and its website is jammed with information about new releases, links to its radio programs and online library. Aficionados know that if you are following worthy but little-known repertoire, you might very well discover that Naxos has recorded it or is in the process of doing so. That approach has had the wonderful effect of demonstrating just how large and rich the repertory really is.

The Seraphic Fire deal means, too, that the days of buying the group’s discs at the ticket tables in their various venues will be supplemented by a recordings powerhouse that will be able to send these recordings to retail outlets all over the world, and make them available at hundreds of digital download sites as well.

In addition to the group’s recordings of the Monteverdi “Vespers of 1610“ and the London version of the Brahms “German Requiem,” the choir has released records of traditional American gospel music and Christmas selections. It plans to release a new Christmas album in November, and after that, a record tentatively titled “This Is Seraphic Fire,” planned for early 2013.
