Shut up Child, This Ain’t Bingo

One of the most striking works up right now at the MOCA’s The Reach of Realism exhibition is Norwegian artist Lars Laumann‘s video piece, Shut up Child, This Ain’t Bingo.

Though the 58 minute long video is currently on display on constant loop as part of the show, this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. there will be a special screening of work from start to finish as part of the MOCA by Moonlight series of Wednesday night art programming.Shut up Child, This Ain’t Bingo in its disjointed fashion tells the story of another Norwegian artist, Kjersti Andvig who in 2006 reached out to a Texas death row inmate named Carlton Turner to collaborate on an art project. Turner was on death row after being convicted of murdering his parents. The project, meant to expose what Andvig thought an unfair system of capital punishment, was to be a prison cell installation decorated in knitting. In the course of their collaboration, Andvig and Turner corresponded and Andvig even made trips to the United States to visit Turner in prison. Something of a love affair begins to blossom between the two, and Laumann’s video documents the affair and Turner’s death in an intensely voyeuristic and engaging experience.
