Sounds of Mozart, Strauss and Brahms at Belk Theater

The much beloved sounds of Mozart, Strauss and Brahms will fill Belk Theater this weekend as the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra performs a Classic Series concert conducted by Christopher Warren-Green. The program will include Mozart’s “The Impresario Overture,” Strauss’ ” Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme” and Brahms’ “Piano Concerto No. 2” featuring pianist Lukas Vondracek.

Vondracek made his debut as a 15-year-old with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, followed by a major U.S. tour in 2003. He regularly works with ensembles such as the London, St. Petersburg and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestras, and he has won international awards, including first prizes at the Hilton Head and San Marino International Piano Competitions, as well as the Raymond E. Buck Jury Discretionary Award at the 2009 International Van Cliburn Piano Competition. This is Vondracek’s second appearance with the Charlotte Symphony. He previously performed Liszt’s “Piano Concerto No. 2” in 2013 with the CSO.

Christopher Warren-Green, music director of the Charlotte Symphony and conductor of this weekend’s concerts.

First up on the program is Mozart’s “The Impresario” or “Der Schauspieldirektor,” which was first preformed in 1786. This was a particularly productive year for Mozart, as he completed his “opera buffa” masterpiece “Le nozze di Figaro” and revised his earlier “opera seria Idomeneo,” in addition to writing several chamber pieces and solo vocal works. “The Impresario” alternates spoken dialogue and sung music to tell the story of an impresario’s struggles to control the egos of two operatic divas. It is a humorous depiction of backstage intrigue.

“Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme (Der Burger als Edelmann),” Suite, Opus 60 by Strauss was first performed in Vienna in 1920. The Suite is scored for piccolo, two flutes, two oboes, English horn, two clarinets, two bassoons, contrabassoon, two horns, trumpet, trombone, timpani, cymbals, triangle, snare drum, harp, piano and strings. It runs approximately 36 minutes.

The concert will conclude with “Concerto No. 2” for Piano and Orchestra in B-flat Major, Opus 83 by Brahms. “No. 2” premiered in November of 1881 at the Redoutensaal in Budapest with Brahms playing the solo for piano and Sandor Erkel conducting the Budapest Philharmonic. This Second Piano Concerto received instant success with the critics and public, unlike Brahms’ First Concerto. He sketched the thematic material for “No. 2” during several trips to Italy with his friend Theodor Billroth, a Viennese surgeon. Upon seeing the score, Billroth compared the Second Piano Concerto to the First as “that of the grown man to the youth; unmistakably the same, yet in every way sturdier, more mature.”

Charlotte Symphony Orchestra will perform works by Mozart, Strauss & Brahms on Feb. 20 and 21 from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Belk Theater at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, 130 N. Tryon St., Charlotte; 704-372-1000. Tickets range from $19-$89 and can be purchased online. For more information and program notes, visit www.charlottesymphony.org.
