Summer Shorts, Keith Hennessy, Camp Kappawanna and more…

Summer is almost here and with it the city is heating up with a range of eclectic, fun and provocative performances and workshops for everyone. If you’re not doing Wynwood Art Walk this Saturday night, check out the performances scheduled for FUNDarte’s Out in the Tropics festival, which features a slew of award-winning, cutting-edge artists from around the world. In addition to Out in the Tropics, the Adrienne Arsht Center has Summer Shorts running throughout the weekend. Plus, Lisa Loeb’s family welcoming Camp Kappawanna and the vibrant acrobatics of Cirque Elioze are just a few weeks away.

Here are some of this weeks highlights: Miami City Theatre’s Summer Shorts, which actually began last week, runs through Sunday, June 26. It stars Bravo TV’s “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” Jai Rodriguez. The shorts feature the “freshest, funniest, fastest 5 to 20 minutes of your life.” Summer Shorts is a great way to see seven original works by emerging and established playwrights from across the United States.

Carnival Studio Theater, Adrienne Arsht Center, 1300 N. Biscayne Blvd. Tickets are $45. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit the Arsht Center.

FUNDarte’s Out in the Tropics festival kicks off June 9, with a line-up of exhilarating performances. (See the full schedule of events here.) The performance getting the most buzz is Keith Hennessy’s Bessie-awarding winning piece “Crotch,” which was presented to critical acclaim at New York’s Dance Theatre Workshop in 2009. “Crotch” references the images and actions of legendary conceptual artist Joseph Beuys.

Colony Theatre, 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach. Tickets are $20 and $15 for students/seniors and may be purchased at fundarte.us or ticketmaster.com, by calling 800-745-3000 or in-person at the Colony Theatre box office, 305-674-1040. For additional information about the event or the festival, visit outinthetropics.com or call 305-910-7898.

Workshop Announcement: Hennessy will facilitate a three- to four-hour workshop, June 11 called, Failure and Struggle as Inspiration for Choreography and Performance (Post-genre experiments in contemporary dance & performance). The practice will involve various approaches to movement, improvisation, collaboration and theory designed for performance artists, dancers, choreographers, circus artists, physical actors, body artists and people who (want to) engage the world through the problematic wonders of their own body. Really, anyone can participate.

For workshop information, call 305-910-7898.
