“The History House” by Niurca Márquez
History, whatever we may think of it, is always a fragile and fractured amalgamation of facts and fictions that we construct in an attempt to explain where we come from and where we will go. Dancer and choreographer Niurca Márquez takes on history in her new work, “The History House,” which pushes the limits of dance and flamenco.
Márquez, known for pushing and blending the aesthetics of dance and flamenco into an experimental sphere, disrupts our expectations of what flamenco was and can be. “The History House” de-contextualizes flamenco, deconstructs stereotypes and examines the passing of cultural memory on from one generation to the next.
“The stories and traditions passed on to us by our grandmothers…leaves behind a genetic imprint that links us to where we come from. In the performance, I’ve delved into that imprint and have created a language using bits and pieces of what I found,” says Márquez. “The History House” is also Márquez’s most personal work to date, as she reflects upon her experiences growing up in Miami in a Cuban household with Spanish ancestry.
“In Miami, I had to find ways to make it relevant to our experiences here. It’s an entire generation that grew up on Spanish movies on Sunday afternoons, dance classes to ‘recapture our ancestry’ with The Beatles playing in the background.”
In line with Márquez’s collaborative nature, “The History House” is a multidisciplinary performance with actor Jose Manuel Dominguez, composer Jose Luis Rodriguez and video artist Dinorah de Jesus Rodriguez.
