“Tool is Loot”
“There will be a swan, a prince, a robot, sexual behavior and two chairs. Sometimes, all at once,” says Wally Cardona and Jennifer Lacey, the artists behind the performance “Tool is Loot.” And let’s be honest, who hasn’t wanted to attend a concert juxtaposing these elements? Sexual behavior and swans may be cliché, but include a robot and a couple of chairs, and the promise of a unique evening is assured. Come to think of it, this sounds like the perfect first date.
To create the collaborative performance, Cardona and Lacey each agreed to work separately for a year designing “empty solos,” after which they met for a week with people working in various fields, such as astrophysics, social activism and architecture (notably absent from this lineup is dancers and choreographers). At the end of the year, Cardona and Lacey — along with composer Jonathan Bepler and lighting designer Thomas Dunn — collaborated to craft their finished performance, a duet that is simultaneously evocative of the original solo projects while also generating new interpretations and pairings that can, at times, be disjunctive or harmonious.
In addition to the performance, Cardona and Lacey will be hosting a panel discussion and separate workshop, both titled “Delightful Disorientation,” for individuals interested in a more personal and intimate exploration with the two choreographers. The panel will be moderated by Helena Thevenot and will include — in addition to Cardona and Lacey — speakers Lisa Beal and Alain Filiz, experts in fields ranging from floral design to oceanography. Like the performance itself, the combination is eccentric and should further the “aesthetic disorientation” its creators are hoping for. In the workshop, participants will take part in games meant to open their minds about the possibilities of a shifting and multitudinous understanding of dance. Both the panel and workshop are free to the public.
