The Los Angeles-based dance company Diavolo returns to the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center with the premiere of two new works, “Transit Space” and “Fluid Infinities,” on Saturday, October 12 at 8 p.m.

Under the Artistic Director Jacques Heim, Diavolo’s performances have redefined space by juxtaposing surrealist architecture with urban culture to create shows that are innovative and highly stylized. “Transit Space” takes urban culture to the stage and uses skateboard ramps to exploit this motif. Originally created in 2012, Transit Space explores the transitional states of loss and purpose. The piece was influenced by the documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys, which follows a group of teenagers who had an immense impact on skateboard culture.

The second premiere of the evening is “Fluid Infinities.” This highly conceptual work takes place on an abstract dome structure sitting on a reflection of itself. In this space, performers cope with struggle and hope through continuous movement. Set to music by Philip Glass, “Fluid Infinities” reveals the malleable nature of our existence.

Before the opening on Saturday evening, Diavolo will hold a free community dance class for dancers of all levels on Saturday, October 12 at 10 a.m. For more information about the community class, call Carla Hill at 786-573-5319.
