Wong in “Cat Lady” by Mad Cat at The Lightbox at Goldman Warehouse

If you want to laugh your head off and learn something about cat ladies, existential loneliness, racism, hording and pick-up artists, see Kristina Wong in Mad Cat Theatre Company’s production of “Cat Lady” at The Lightbox at the Goldman Warehouse through January 20th.

Written by Wong and directed by Mad Cat’s Paul Tei, “Cat Lady” wrestles with one of life’s biggest mysteries: cat ladies. Inspired by Wong’s dysfunctional (he had spraying problems) cat Oliver, “Cat Lady” examines the lives of women who, for one reason or another, became prey to aggressive (overweight) pick-up artists who try to seduce them. However, “Cat Lady” isn’t just about cat ladies. It’s also about the trajectory of a life that leads one from point A to point B to point cat hoarding.

I became a fan (and Facebook stalker) of Wong’s work after seeing “Going Green the Wong Way” in which she attempts to do the right thing for the environment her own way. Wong’s genius is her salacious humor, a kind of humor that takes a stab at complex social issues without alienating or patronoizing her audiences. Wong is brutally honest, and that’s what makes her work brutally real and connected. Wong also makes theater (dirty) fun.

Catch Wong before she becomes a superstar and makes good on her modest, though mostly outrageous, New Year’s resolutions to become a millionaire and win five MacArthur Genius Awards. Wong is mad crazy and her work reflects the naughty, yet socially conscious humor that lives in her. For two more weeks, live the life of a cat lady, Wong-style.
