“Abuela” at Cano’s Red Velvet Theater

This Saturday, June 22nd at 8:30 p.m., artist Pablo Cano’s Red Velvet Theater (located in his home in Little Havana) presents “Abuela” by Marissa Alma Nick. “Abuela” is Nick’s solo project that examines living with Alzheimer’s.

“Abuela” by Marissa Alma Nick.

Nick’s grandmother, who has lived with Alzheimer’s for the last 15 years, inspired “Abuela.” The multi-layered performance loosely documents the emotional cost and physical consequences of living with dementia. The performance juxtaposes recent photographs of Nick’s grandmother with the dancer on stage. The dancer represents the grandmother’s former self coming to terms with her reality.

“Abuela” is a collaboration with composer Roberto Ledesma and also features Pablo Cano and Jahzel Dotel. Cano’s Red Velvet Theater only holds 15 people, so remember to RSVP before venturing out.

“Abuela” will be performed on Saturday, June 22nd at 8:30 p.m.. Seating is limited to 15 guests per show. RSVP required: 305-642-1774. Red Velvet Theater is located at 2485 S.W. 5th Street, Miami.
