“Antigonón” undresses Cuba at the Miami Dade Auditorium

My resolution for 2015: never miss another FUNDarte event, ever! Although this may be impossible, I’ll work my socks off to keep it.

“Antigonón” by Cuba’s Teatro El Público.

For four nights (January 22-25), FUNDarte – in collaboration with The Miami Dade County Auditorium – presents Teatro El Público’s Antigonón, a tragically absurd and poetic revisioning of the myth of Antigone, populated with heroes from Cuban history, such as the revolutionary poet José Martí.

(View a clip from Antigonón here.)

Described as Havana’s most irreverent theater company, Teatro El Público never fails to shock while also facilitating our understanding of complex social and political issues. Written by Cuban playwright Rogelio Orizondo and directed by Carlos Díaz, Antigonón is a highly sensual and erotic work that abandons convention (and clothing) to reveal a post-modern interpretation of Cuba where reality and modernity collide.

Antigonón, along with its outrageously absurd costumes, jars us with a non-linear narrative of Cuban history and our memory of it. It’s political, sexual, passionate and emotional. It also arrives during a very important new era in Cuban-American relations.

Antigonón sold out more than 100 performances in Havana, so get your tickets now.

Teatro El Público’s Antigonón will be performed at the On.Stage Black.Box Theater at Miami Dade County Auditorium, 2901 W. Flagler St., Miami; 305-547-5414. Performances are January 22-24 at 8:30 p.m. and January 25 at 5 p.m. General admission tickets are $35 and can be purchased online at www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 800-745-3000.
