Event Preview: Culture Clash In AmeriCCa

Are you ready for Culture Clash in AmeriCCA, MiaMMi? This Friday and Saturday November 12th and 13th, the Center for Cultural Collaborations International and Miami Dade College’s Cultura Del Lobo Performance Series presents Culture Clash in AmeriCCA: Real People, Real Stories.

Culture Clash In AmeriCCa is real theater of the moment. The troupe brings “history, geography, ‘urban excavation’, ‘forensic poetry’ and storytelling together in a contemporary, movable theater narrative through a Chicano point of view.” The troupe is a triad of Chicano/Latino performers, including culture clashers Richard Montoya, Ric Salinas and Herbert Siguenza who “practiced the art of theatrical-social anthropology by digging deep into America’s culture to formulate their outrageous brand of ‘performance collage’.”

Variety Magazine says “Montoya, Salinas and Siguenza have turned years’ worth of coast-to-coast interviews, most seemingly with the marginalized and disenfranchised, into monologues, blackouts and longer sketches satirically illuminating the variously fractious or filial state of multicultural relations.” Preview a clip of a past performance here.

Culture Clash in AmeriCCA’s performances are entirely adapted (or collaged) from real interviews with people from across the country. Many of the interviews are conducted with people who live ‘radically’ diverse and disconnected lives. Their use of satire, vaudeville, mime and spoken word seem to be the glue that holds the voices together. Through this process, the troupe makes the invisible real-life characters who live among and/or with us visible.
