Former Miami City Ballet’s Alex Wong on So You Think You Can Dance

Who knew that a tribute to Edward Villella could lead to this? I should be asking questions like: Will Alex Wong’s play on So You Think You Can Dance attract a bigger and younger audience for his former company, Miami City Ballet? But I can’t think straight right now. I’m mesmerized by Wong’s crossover performance. To borrow the new MCB slogan, now that’s what I call “physical poetry.” And to paraphrase hip hop choreographer Tabitha: It’s so Wong, it’s right. UPDATE: I have a feeling that this will be a story with, forgive the pun, legs. There has certainly been controversy stirred up online, at forums like Television Without Pity’s SYTYCD forum on whether this was a smart career move for Wong and/or a good publicity move for MCB. I can’t wait to get home to Miami to start reporting.

Meanwhile, here at the American Dance Festival in Durham, I’ve learned from Stephanie Glickman, the woman who literally wrote the book on So You Think You Can Dance (well, So You Think You Can Dance: Australia Takes the Stage), that appearances by Sydney Dance Company and other major contemporary companies promoting particular seasons on the show down under lead to spikes in ticket sales for those seasons. “So You Think You Can Dance is an entry point for new audiences in dance,” Glickman says.
