Inkub8 New Ideas at Intensive Lab This Week

In dance improvisation, a structure is often established to give a shape to spontaneous movement. Choreographer Heather Maloney has expanded that idea this week by establishing a structure for the continuous improvisation that is contemporary dance in Miami: the Inkub8 Summer Movement Lab.

Maloney has recruited a dream team of many of the most provocative choreographers working in South Florida today to share their expertise in classes open to the dance public at large. Though the workshop began last Friday, there is still time for latecomers to stop in for sessions ranging from basic body work (yoga, pilates) to technique in improvisation and composition (with Maloney and the powerful Carlota Pradera) to helpful lessons for dance artists both practical (marketing and websites) and fanciful (something called the “auto-bio-state-of-the-artist-writing workshop, offered by poet/choreographer Elizabeth Doud and Neil de la Flor).

Tomorrow, Friday from 2pm – 5pm, I have the honor of teaming up with choreographer and performance scholar Helena Thevenot for a workshop on writing about dance and dancing about writing (it’s billed as an improvisation/composition lab). We invite dancers and dance fans to join us as we explore ways to use technologies old and new to spark conversations among dancers and their audiences.

The Inkub8 Summer Intensive Movement Lab takes place at Inkub8, 2021 NW First Place, Miami, FL, 33127; See schedule below or visit www.inkub8.org; Individual classes cost $12 and Saturday workshops cost $20.
