Merce Cunningham Returns

Basel just got a bit brighter. The Merce Cunningham Dance Company (MCDC) is returning to Miami during the fair for a special “only-in-Miami” show. The performances, held as part of the Arsht Center’s Masterworks Series, are funded by a $150,000 grant by Knight Foundation. Designed specifically for the Arsht Center, the shows feature dancers on three levels, on-stage audience seating and a site-specific installation by Miami/New York visual artist Daniel Arsham, Cunningham’s most recent artistic collaborator.

The Miami Herald reported on the performance this week, noting: “The Cunningham troupe should have a unique appeal to the art-world cognoscenti who flood Miami-Dade during Art Basel. Cunningham and composer John Cage, his longtime personal and artistic partner, had a significant influence on the arts world and collaborated with many famous artists. Their closest connection was to Robert Rauschenberg, who lived in Captiva and worked with the pair from the early 1950s.”
