Now Appearing at the Arsht Center: Chuck Close and Gerhard Richter

The Adrienne Arsht Center continues forging its successful path to becoming the town square for artistic programing — not just for performing arts, but all disciplines — with the unveiling of the year-long exhibit, “The Lincoln Center List Collection in Miami.” Over 30 prints from some of the most important hands

in the last half-century in visual arts are spread around the two buildings: the Knight Concert Hall and the Ziff Ballet Opera House.

First off,  it’s an attractive way to view works, inside these beautifully designed buildings while waiting to see another form of art on stage. The pieces range in style from Abstract Expressionism to Minimalism, to some nice examples of Color Field painting.

So behind an information desk in the opera entry is a wonderful Guillermo Kuitca, a densely layered work based on the auditorium of Alice Tully Hall. If you’re missing Helen Frankenthaler, you can get your fix as there are several of her works here: again those explorations of color, some of which took two years to create. There is a Chuck Close, a Jim Dine, a Howard Hodgkin, and a host of prints from a younger generation.

Two works that stand out in the midst of all this color are black-and-white water-scapes: Ocean With Cross from Veja Celmins, and Wave from Robert Longo. Both convey incredible movement but are somewhat illusory.

The List Collection has grown up at New York’s Lincoln Center, where from its groundbreaking works, limited-edition prints have been commissioned specifically for that seminal performing arts center. There, and now in Miami, some are for sale.

One other great visual as you visit the exhibit: the view of downtown Miami from the raised walkway while moving from building to building — what a sparkling skyline has finally popped up, along with the Arsht Center, in the last several years.

The List Collection can be toured (for free) starting on Nov. 20, every Saturday at noon; and also before performances, if you have tickets; call 786-468-2326 or go to [email protected]. For art inquiries or purchase, contact co-coordinators the Center for Visual Communication, www.Visual.org.
