Teatro Buendia Brings a New Day for Miami Theater

Teatro Buendía has been one of the most acclaimed theater groups in Cuba practically since it’s inception 25 years ago. Their vibrant explorations of the possibilities of the stage have earned accolades not only on the island, but across Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Finally, at a single performance on Saturday night, Miami audiences will have a chance to see why.

Buendía debuts in Miami with “La visita de la vieja dama” (The Old Lady’s Visit) by Swiss playwright Friedrich Durrenmatt, about a woman who leaves her hometown, finds fortune, then returns 40 years later to exact revenge of those who mistreated her back home — while the townspeople ironically view her as their economic savior. As far away as Chicago, a critic connected the dots between that prodigal Swiss and the Cuban exiles who may someday return home, either to exact revenge, bestow economic salvation, or both.

But this is no work of propaganda; Buendía is sure to present the material with a stylized physicality and a sharp sense of humor that will deflect any reductive interpretation. South Florida has been waiting far too long for this particular visit.

“The Old Lady’s Visit” an adaptation by Raquel Carrió of the play by Friedrich Durrenmatt, directed by Flora Lauten runs one night only at the Manuel Artime Theater, 900 SW 1st St. Little Havana, Friday, July 23, at 8:30pm. Tickets: $25; $20 for students and seniors. Call 800-595-4849 or visit www.fundarte.us
