The camera moves choreographers and filmmakers

This Saturday, August 31st, Eddy Fernandez, Jr. and Marissa Alma Nick will lead a workshop for Screen Dance Miami. Screen Dance Miami is a four-day festival slated for January that will offer skill-developing workshops, panel discussions and screenings for local artists and directors exploring movement and dance on film.

The Screen Dance workshop is intended for those interested in creating work for the festival and understanding the process of capturing dance on film. Fernandez and Nick will guide artists by viewing and comparing a selection of screen dances, as well as discussing strategies for conceiving and creating work for the camera. The workshop will also cover basic camera operation, lighting techniques and tips for editing screen dances.

Screen Dance Miami is a relatively underdeveloped and misunderstood form. The festival and this work seeks to create awareness and practical strategies for creating dynamic films that capture movement.

The “How to Create a Screen Dance” workshop takes place Saturday, August 31 from 3-4 p.m. at INKUB8, 2021 NW 1st Pl., Miami; 305-324-4337; www.inkub8.org. The deadline to submit a screen dance is October 1st, 2013. To submit, visit tigertail.org.
