The return of Mark Morris Dance Group

It’s been 15 years since the Mark Morris Dance Group (MMDG), known for its quirky, seductive and sensual choreography, performed in Miami. This upcoming performance is a must-see for enthusiasts who enjoy the perfect fusion of dance and music. And who knows when the troupe will return. For two nights only,Oct. 14 to 15 at 8 p.m., the  Mark Morris Dance Group will perform as part of the Knight Masterworks Season, Sanford and Beatrice Ziff Dance Series.

I’ve never seen Mark Morris Dance Group perform live, but the quality of its repertory program, viewed via YouTube, shows a troupe that engages the audience with beautiful imagery and movement. But what sets Mark Morris Dance Group apart is its emphasis on and dedication to live music for each and every performance. It is clear that music is an essential element that brings Mark Morris Dance Group’s dancers and the audience to life. Mark Morris Dance Group will perform three modern dance pieces: “Festival Dance” with music by Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Piano Trio No.5; “All Fours,” set to Béla Bartók’s Fourth String Quartet; and “V.”

Community outreach: The troupe will offer a 90-minute community master class, open to the public, on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011 at 2 p.m. in the Arsht Center’s Peacock Foundation Studio. The master class in modern dance technique, and Mark Morris repertory is designed for dancers at the intermediate level and above, ages 16 and older. A master class for dance students from New World School of the Arts college will also be offered at the Center’s Peacock Foundation Studio. For further information visit www.arshtcenter.org/educate.
