WordSpeak Heats Up National Poetry Semi-Finals

Each year the presenting organization Tigertail sends a group of local teenagers to Brave New Voices, billed as the world’s largest spoken word and poetry slam. This year team Miami made it all the way to the semi-finals powered by “Cello” a fierce team performance by Shamoyia Gardiner and Yarminiah Rosa (here’s the actual semifinal, it’s just not as close up as the quarterfinal). Also making a splash were the men on Miami’s team (readers, help me out with their names). UPDATE: The young men in the video featured here are Diego Mosquera and Wesley George, performing the poem “Renaissance.” (Thanks to Mary Luft for filling me in.) Under the fearless leadership of Teo Castellanos, Tigertail Wordspeak represents the reality of life in Miami to the rest of the world. Here we have a harsh look at family life and a beautiful meditation on love. Congratulations, Wordspeak!
