    DocumentCloud, an open-source platform that allows journalists and their readers to upload, analyze, annotate and collaborate on primary source documents, was founded in 2009 with a grant from the Knight News Challenge. Since then, it has been adopted by news outlets big and small for collaboration on investigations such as the Panama Papers and to make sourcing transparent to readers. Knight has continued to invest in the platform

    Americans give a "thumbs up" to news reporters using social media to interact with their audiences, but they prefer that reporters use it to correct the record or give greater depth on the stories they are reporting, instead of expressing their opinions about the news. A new Gallup/Knight Foundation survey finds 74% of U.S. adults saying it is generally a "good idea" for news reporters to interact via social media, with 25% describing it as a "bad idea."

Last week's announcement of a merger between Gannett and Gatehouse media, which would consolidate ownership of more than 260 local newspapers, is the latest in a trend that also affects local TV, with companies such as Sinclair Broadcast Group buying stations around the country.
