WHAT WE FUND

Knight supports informed and engaged communities where the Knight brothers owned and operated newspapers. We believe an engaged community is one in which people are attached to the place where they live and are invested in the community’s future. Learn more through our Statement of Strategy.

In Miami, Knight seeks to position entrepreneurship and technology to play a more central role in the city’s growth and increase resident participation in community life. We’re focused on growing the education pipelines that develop tech talent. Our work is in response to increasing demand –– from Miamians, who seek to participate in the city’s growing tech economy, and from companies, who need more skilled talent to power their growth.

We also seek to enhance community resilience in the face of a changing climate by supporting organizations that actively involve residents in developing and implementing climate solutions. Our funding focuses on the use of digital tools to inform and engage residents, ensuring their active participation in shaping these solutions.

OUR WORK

Since 2012, Knight has invested more than $62 million to nurture Miami’s tech and entrepreneurship ecosystem by creating local investor networks, growing the city’s talent base, and building a stronger sense of community among entrepreneurs and tech practitioners.

In recent years, Knight has invested in efforts to advance locally informed climate solutions. Investments include a host of nationally recognized organizations, including Aspen Ideas: Climate, Miami Waterkeeper, Everglades Foundation and Miami-Dade Innovation Authority

Knight also invests in Miami’s arts and culture as a way to connect people to place and to one another. Investing in arts and culture is central to Knight’s effort to build stronger, better informed and more engaged communities, which are critical for a more effective democracy. OUR WORK

In partnership with the city and other funders, we piloted Reimagining the Civic Commons, an initiative to connect and reinvigorate public spaces such as parks, trails, recreation centers and libraries. Our goal is to bring together people from all backgrounds, develop new local leaders and foster a more vibrant, engaged community.

Since 2015, the initiative has spread to six other cities and helped create five new civic assets in Philadelphia, including a riverfront park and trail, a renovated public library and park space, an elevated park, an outdoor education and nature center, and recreational amenities for one of the city’s signature public spaces West Fairmount Park. All were developed with input from the surrounding communities.

The University of Akron is a driver of downtown’s success and the region’s economy and talent pipeline. In 2022, Knight committed $20 million towards a $42 million capital campaign to turn the Polsky Building into a vibrant gateway from campus to Main Street. In Middlebury, Knight has provided $6 million to support The Well Community Development Corporation’s initiative to rehabilitate housing and provide wrap-around services for residents.

In 2017, Akron was selected to participate in a national initiative called Reimagining the Civic Commons. The Akron Civic Commons team has focused on the city’s shared civic assets from Downtown Akron to Summit Lake along the Towpath trail to foster engagement, equity, environmental sustainability and economic development. This resident-centered work has led to catalytic capital projects including the Knight Stage at the Akron Civic Theatre, the Summit Lake Nature Center, the transformation of Lock 3 Park and the creation of a Summit Lake Park.
